Postnatal Depression
In the days immediately following birth, many women experience the 'baby blues' which is a common condition related to hormonal changes, affecting up to 80 per cent of women. The 'baby blues', or general stress adjusting to pregnancy and/or a new baby, are common experiences, but are different from depression. Depression is longer lasting and can affect not only the mother, but her relationship with her baby, the child's development, the mother's relationship with her partner and with other members of the family.
At RENEW we understand how paramount it is for the mother to receive an education on how to manage the new found stress in an effective manner, so she can enjoy this wonderful new experience in her life. It is a particular learned way of thinking that is causing her stress and leading to her feelings of depression. It is not the new events themselves. Once she recognises and understands the triggers and causes of her depression and learns how to respond differently, she will recover.
